Nannette Brodie Dance Theatre, a modern dance company of drama, wit, joy and invention capable of moving everyone in their audience, presented their first performance in 1986.

Nannette Brodie is the artistic director and principal choreographer for the company. According to Nannette, “Dance should be a celebration, an exploration of ourselves and our environment, of our culture and our world.” NBDT has given performances for over 275,000 people both within the Southern California area and by touring nationally and internationally, averaging 15 to 25 performances a year.

They have received 23 project grants from the Arts Council for Long Beach, as well as support from Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, Pacific Life, Kaiser Permanente, Wells Fargo, Target, Hyatt Regency Long Beach, Days Inn, William Gillespie Foundation, California Council for the Humanities, Boeing Company, Josephine Gumbiner Foundation, Long Beach Community Foundation, LA County Board of Supervisors, Los Angeles Arts Commission, Doolittle Foundation, the Dwight Stuart Foundation and the Disney Community Foundation. The William Gillespie Foundation has awarded two grants to NBDT to develop international touring and to support their concerts in Southern California. The Arts Council for Long Beach has given continual support since 1989 for concert seasons, administrative development, marketing and school residencies.

NBDT is a member and frequently showcases for presenters at the Western Arts Alliance Conferences and for the Association for Performing Arts Presenters in New York.

NBDT has performed with the music ensemble, Enoch Train, at the Ford Amphitheatre of Hollywood in their evening work entitled, “Heartland—The Immigrant Experience.” The company also collaborated with musicians from Enoch Train on their production of “All Things Irish,” which was presented at the Madrid Theater in Canoga Park, CA. The company is available for touring with their Heartland production, All Thing Irish show and their repertoire concerts, including the newer works, Body of Water, Night Blooms, Dark to Light and many more.  Their newest work based on interviews with USA veterans is called Every Soldier has a Story, and it has received stunning reviews this season.

The company's successful collaboration for 2010 - 2014 was with the Long Beach Opera. Nannette Brodie and the company has choreographed five operas for the nationally recognized company, Akhnaten, Maria de Buenos Aires, Ainadamar, Paper Nautilus and Camelia la Tejana. This has been a great opportunity for the NBDT dancers to work with the talented cast and director, Andreas Mitisek, on these productions and have received glowing newspaper reviews for our work with the opera. We plan to work on the upcoming season and more in the future with the Long Beach Opera.

NBDT along with their foundation South Coast Arts Alliance, produce the So-Cal Dance Invitational, a showcase of Southern California dance companies.  There have been four productions in Orange County and two in Hollywood in collaboration with the LA Arts Commission.  For 2019 the festival will be presented in Long Beach.

NBDT celebrated their 20th Anniversary in December of 2007. Since that time NBDT has traveled to Arizona and Nevada for residencies and festivals, toured to Iceland and Finland, and completed many educational outreach projects in Californian communities. NBDT celebrated their 25th Anniversary in 2012, and their 30th Anniversary was celebrated on June 2, 2018.  NBDT continues to grow and develop new audiences each year.
