In 2010, Nannette Brodie Dance Theatre began to choreograph for the Long Beach Opera.  It has been an amazing journey collaborating with the creative director, Andreas Mitisek.

The work has been adventurous and always contemporary in style and operatic material.  NBDT has performed and choreographed Phillip Glass’ Akhnaten, which allowed them to work with the talented visuals of Frieder Weiss.  Ainadamar was a beautiful opera which featured the dancers flying.  Maria de Buenos Aires was presented at the Warner Grand Theater, and it brought the pathos of the 70’s Dirty War intertwined with the passionate tango. The drug wars of Mexico with the mythical character, Camelia, put the dancers in the roles of immigrants and drug lords in Camelia la Texana.  The Aquarium of the Pacific was the setting for the enchanting, Paper Nautilus, as dancers moved singers like waves of the sea and descended into depths from silks.  Our last project with LBO was the Gala Opening of the Pacific Visions Theater at the Aquarium of the Pacific.

The experience of collaborating with opera, live music, new composers and incredible singers has been profound.  NBDT would like to continue their work with contemporary opera as we have done for 4 years.
